What are the Symptoms of Depression? Before that, Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to day to day activity that can affect a person’s thoughts, behavior, feelings and sense of well-being. These people are often sad, anxious, empty, hopeless, helpless, worthless, guilty, irritable or restless. Depressed people lose interest in activities that were once pleasurable.

Are You Depressed?

Most of the time if a person  suffering from clinical depression, will experience several of the following signs and symptoms. You can’t sleep or you sleep too much, you can’t concentrate on previously easy tasks are now difficult or you feel hopeless and helpless.

You can’t control your negative thoughts, you have lost your appetite or you can’t stop eating or you are much more irritable, short-tempered, or aggressive than usual. You’re consuming more alcohol than normal, engaging in other reckless behavior or you have thoughts that life is not worth living. 

Symptoms of Depression

Symptoms of depression may experience differently for men and women. It will change according to age, sex and situations. Some have most of the symptoms and other have less. Keep watching for most of the symptoms of depression before you make a diagnosis. 

This includes Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions, Fatigue and decreased energy. Some feels Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and/or helplessness, Feelings of hopelessness and/or pessimism too. Other symptoms includes Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping, Irritability, restlessness etc.


Depressed persons have Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, including sex. They suffer Overeating or appetite loss, Persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment. Most of the time they found Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” feelings and have Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts.

Causes of Depression?

There are lots of causes for depression in different individuals. Past physical, sexual, or emotional abuse can cause depression later in life. Some drugs, such as Accutane,  the antiviral drug interferon-alpha, and corticosteroids trigger depressive mood. Those have  biological vulnerability to develop depression easily gets this.

A family history of depression may increase the risk. Watch for Symptoms of Depression. Other causes are  substance abuse problems and Sadness or grief from the death or loss of a loved one, though natural, cause it. Some fell depressed from social isolation due to other mental illnesses or being cast out of a family or social group. 

Some good things like starting a new job, graduating, or getting married can lead to depression. Sometimes depression co-exists with a major illness or is a reaction to the illness. Among this Trauma, grief, financial troubles, and unemployment are major causes. 


Treatment of Depression

Symptoms of Depressions can be treated and cured. You can go for Psychological treatment options – talking therapies for Depression includes CBT or Cognitive behaviour therapy. This includes recognizes that a person’s way of thinking (cognition) and acting (behavior) affects the way they feel. Another one is Interpersonal therapy (IPT).

In this they focuses on problems in personal relationships and the skills required to deal with these problems. This helping people to recognize patterns in their relationships that make them more vulnerable to depression. Behaviour therapy is a major component of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). 

But, this  focuses exclusively on increasing a person’s level of activity and pleasure in their life. Unlike CBT, this not focus on changing the person’s beliefs and attitudes. Mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) delivered in groups and involves learning a type of meditation called ‘mindfulness meditation’.
