Bladder Cancer – Warning signs, Causes and Treatment

Bladder Cancer Causes

Cause of Bladder cancer in most of the cases is not known.  This is often related to smoking, a parasitic infection, radiation and chemical exposure as etiology. Exposure of bladder cells to any of the unfavorable situation cause to grow cells abnormally. These abnormal cells form a tumor and results in cancer. 

Symptoms

Patient with suspected bladder cancer complains about Blood in urine (hematuria). While urinating they notice dark yellow, bright red or cola colored urine. In Some cases, urine may appear normal, but blood may be detected in a microscopic examination of the urine. Other signs and symptoms of bladder cancer includes Frequent urination, Painful urination, Back pain and Pelvic pain.

Bladder Cancer Treatment

Individual Treatment options for bladder cancer depend on a number of factors, including the type and stage of the cancer. In starting if your tumor is small, go for Transurethral resection (TUR), which is often used to remove bladder cancers.

For a large tumor, doctors recommends for segmental cystectomy, sometimes called partial cystectomy which is the removal of part of bladder. One may experience more frequent urination after segmental cystectomy. 

In case of advanced invasive type cancer, you may have to under go  radical cystectomy – operation to remove the entire bladder, as well as surrounding lymph nodes. Along with this there is need for Surgery to create a new way for urine to leave your body (urostomy) . This is the creation of a tube (urinary conduit) using a piece of your intestine.

Biological therapy, sometimes called immunotherapy administered through your urethra and directly into the bladder (intravesical therapy). Drugs used are Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) and Interferon. Chemotherapy and Radiation therapy also used to treat bladder cancer.

Prognosis and Survival

Bladder cancer if found and got adequate treatment in early stages – have good prognosis. Five-year survival rates in the United States are around 77% for patients with bladder cancer. This is also the  9th leading cause of cancer with 430,000 new cases and 165,000 deaths occurring in 2012.
